In a significant stride towards mitigating climate change impacts and enhancing community resilience, Bomet County, through its Department of Environment and Climate Change, has commenced the distribution of over 19,500 avocado seedlings to farmer groups.
This extensive initiative spans eleven wards across Sotik, Konoin, Bomet East, and Bomet Central Sub-Counties missed out in the initial distribution last year.
Governor Prof. Hillary Barchok, while leading the second round of fruit tree distribution, encouraged farmers to diversify into avocado farming as an alternative livelihood thus reducing reliance on climate-vulnerable crops and generating significant income for households.
These under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program, a collaborative effort between the Kenyan government and the World Bank designed to bolster community resilience against the escalating impacts of climate change at the grassroots level.
In Bomet Central; Sonokwek Setkobor with 180 members from Ndarawetta ward received 5400 seedlings, Chemogoi farmers group with 172 members from Chesoen ward got 5,160 seedlings, Koyumi group with 188 members from Silibwet Township ward got 3,780 seedlings while Mokito from Singorwet ward received 3,780 seedlings.
