Bomet Governor prof. Hillary Barchok has, this morning presided over the stocking of Emmaus Community Based Fish pond in Chemagel Ward, Sotik sub-county, in the company of KALRO Oljororok Centre Director Mr Mathai Ndung’u.
One thousand high-quality tilapia fingerlings from Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), were introduced, aiming to establish a sustainable and climate-smart food source in exemplifying the county government’s commitment to empowering local communities to mitigate the far-reaching effects of the climate change phenomenon.
“My administration has initiated stocking of 25 fish ponds across the county, an initiative funded by the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program through the Department Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change”, said the governor.
Prof Barchok added that going forward, his administration shall be partnering with KALRO to establish a state-of-the-art fish hatchery in Bomet to enhance the county’s ability to breed more fingerlings for its people.
With 109 members, the group is among the 25 that have received high-quality YY Tilapia fungerlings that will be ready for harvesting in the next six months.
Additionally, KALRO has also committed to establishing a branch in Bomet town to conduct research on specific aspects of livestock production in Bomet, ascountynty.
The function was also attended by, among others, DG Shadrack Rotich, area MCA Dennis Busienei, COs and officers from the Kenya Fisheries department.
